These Days

In 2001, Giuseppe Piccioni’s Light of My Eyes was screened at the Venice Film Festival, where it took home Best Actor and Best Actress awards. The celebrated Italian director returned to Venice last year with These Days, which competed for the Golden Lion – Best Film.

This coming-of-age road odyssey follows four friends on a trip to Belgrade for work, but who discover much more about themselves along the way. Caterina, the spiky and combative leader, instigates the journey to get away from her life and erase her past. Her friends, Liliana, Angela and Anna reluctantly agree to join her, and it soon transpires that they too are looking for an escape. A clever student preparing her thesis, Liliana dances nervously around a mutual attraction to her literature professor Mariani, Angela claims to be able to read the future but she’s unsure of the commitment of her older boyfriend. Anna is completing her music conservatory studies during the first months of pregnancy. With, Caterina, her rough exterior masks a secret growing attraction.

Margherita Buy, the frequent muse of director Piccioni's early films, is excellent in her role as the never-grown-up mother of one of four young women.
