John Turturro's Passione
EXCLUSIVE TO CANBERRA
John Turturro is probably best known as the brilliant Hollywood character actor who has starred in everything from Barton Fink to Transformers. He is also the director of a number of independent films, and his latest, Passione, is an exuberant tribute to the music of Naples.
This is the city that has given the world the six-string guitar, opera giant Enrico Caruso and a centuries old tradition of passionate singing. As our on screen guide, Turturro explores the narrow streets of this evocative city through a series of songs across enduring local themes including love, sex, jealousy, immigration, protest – and of course melodrama.
Part documentary and part jukebox musical, this could be Italy's Buena Vista Social Club, highlighting the strong presence and wide ranging impact of music from Naples on the world music scene. Switching between toe-tapping and heart-string tugging songs, the soundtrack includes Arabic trip-hop by Raiz, dance tunes from Pietra Montecorvino, jazz by saxophone legend James Senese and much, much more.
Passione is bound to have audiences singing and dancing out of the cinema. Don't miss this festival gem!
